The Essence of Palestine

Pharmacare - An Expression of Trust

Pharmacare Pharmaceuticals (PLC) is a leading pharmaceutical company in the State of Palestine that specializes in the domestic development, production, and marketing of generic and proprietary-branded pharmaceuticals, and provides a full line of veterinary products. It is furthermore a distributor of global pharmaceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and over-the-counter products within the Palestinian market. Production lines include major dosage forms such as tablets, suspensions, capsules, gels, syrups, creams, ointments, shampoos, elixirs, topical solutions, and oral solutions.

Incorporated as a public shareholding company in 1985, Pharmacare was initiated by a group of Palestinian entrepreneurs led by the late Subhi Khoury Nasr as chairman of the board, a pioneer pharmacist who in 1962 started the first pharmaceutical manufacturing company in Jordan. The company is located in a small, environmentally friendly industrial zone in the Beitunia district near Ramallah, 15 km north of Jerusalem. One of Palestine’s leading businesses within the private sector, Pharmacare enjoys a firmly established local presence and aspires to expand into the European and international markets, operating through a carefully tailored network of subsidiaries.

Pharmacare has adopted the motto “Expression of Trust,” as it follows a policy of manufacturing quality products at affordable prices. Amoxicare was its first product, marking the onset of a series of successes with tens of products and hundreds of items. The company’s fine reputation and acknowledged credibility regarding its manufactured products were further appreciated when, between the late eighties and early nineties, it passed a number of international inspections and assessments. Pharmacare is proud that from its inception, quality has been pivotal to operations. Adequate funds have been earmarked for development, the building of facilities that comply with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), and the implementation of state-of-the-art quality systems.

In 1993, Pharmacare was the first Palestinian pharmaceutical company to initiate an export campaign to the Ex-Soviet Union. In 2000, the company bridged business with Germany and the European Union to strengthen entry into their lucrative markets, when it signed a joint venture agreement with the leading Grünenthal GmbH of Aachen, giving it 22 percent of Pharmacare’s shares. The early 2000s furthermore witnessed a drastic expansion of Pharmacare’s operations with the introduction of new therapeutic lines that enhanced sales and with the inauguration of Pharmacare’s state-of-the-art production facility, rendering the company GMP-compliant, with fully equipped quality care, and research and development labs.

Pharmacare marks the first pharmaceutical company in Palestine to earn the prestigious European Good Manufacturing Practice. Such an accolade exemplifies the company’s thriving for quality and perfection, and attests to a well-justified motto: “An Expression of Trust.’’

Upon obtaining the European Union Good Manufacturing Practice (EU GMP) from the competent authority in Germany in 2008 – renewed in January 2011, December 2013, and July 2016 upon the completion of intensive and rigorous inspections – Pharmacare was proven able to adhere to the continuously changing c-GMP guidelines. In particular, the zoning system was implemented, which requires complete separation and independent access to production, packaging, laboratories, and stores. Being granted EU GMP, ISO 9001 and ISO 14000 certificates and other prestigious awards, Pharmacare has become the first local pharma company to export its locally manufactured products to over fifteen countries in three continents.

Further expansion after the launching of Pharmacare Premium gave rise to the establishment of Pharmacare Global as a major distributor in Western Europe, whereas Pharmacare International was established as a major distributor in Eastern Europe. In 2009, the next natural step was to establish a European manufacturing facility in Malta, known as Pharmacare Premium. The new facility has a high-potency oncology production line and services Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Furthermore, Pharmacare was the first Palestinian pharmaceutical company to acquire the challenging Brazilian Good Manufacturing Practice Certificate in 2012, following a successful ANVISA audit. The circumvention of the Brazilian GMP checkpoint has set up an exclusive, regionally unprecedented route for the delivery of Palestinian pharmaceutical products to Latin American countries.

Throughout the past 35 years, Pharmacare has served as a successful role model in the Palestinian economy and displayed a consistently growing profile over its home market. With over 70 products, 150 items, 511 investors, and over 300 employees among the various facilities, Pharmacare reliably supplies premium affordable medicines to the local population, consistently increases returns to its shareholders, and steadily continues to develop as an international business, currently covering a wide range of geographical locations worldwide. Pharmacare is setting a perfect example of the Palestinian potential for excellence.
