Mariam-Tamari-1

Soprano Mariam Tamari was born to be an artist. On the side of her Palestinian father, the renowned painter Vladimir Tamari, originally from Jaffa, are her aunts Vera Tamari, the artist, and Tania Tamari Nasir, the operatic soprano. On her Japanese side, her mother Kyoko is a costume designer, her grandmother Hoshiko a calligrapher, and her sister Mona an eminent architect in the United States. Born in Tokyo, educated in the United States, and now based in Paris, Mariam has sung on stages worldwide, notably for the emperor and empress of Japan, the king and queen of Jordan, and three prime ministers of Japan. Having been guest soloist for the historic debut of the Palestine National Orchestra, as well as guest of honor for the 25th anniversary of the Cairo Opera House, Mariam has sung with orchestras from Brazil to Indonesia, Japan to Egypt, Algeria, France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, and of course, Palestine. Passionate for the cause of her fatherland, in 2015 she was the subject of the documentary My Song, My Palestine, produced and broadcast in 140 countries by Japanese national television. Beyond music, she writes and illustrates her long-running monthly column “Mornings in Palestine” for Subaru, Japan’s foremost literary journal.
